S 10-07-1910 Quick Work Saves Barns – While filling the silo on the John VandeSand farm just northwest of the city last Saturday, sparks from the engine set fire to the straw stack. Quick work by the many men present kept the flames under control, but the fire had eaten its way into the stack and there was plenty of fire and danger that it would break out at any time. The tank wagon belonging to the threshing engine was brought into use, and two teams were sent to this city in a hurry and brought out the two sprinkling wagons. Water was then plenty and with the force pumps at hand was played onto the stack. But it was necessary to tear down what was left of the stack in order to put out the fire where it had eaten into the stack. It was certainly fortunate that plenty of help was at hand, and the organization of a fire department is a credit to the farmers there. The stack was not more than ten feet away from the barn.
