Pre-1835

Event:
Indian tribes in the Burlington area at the beginning of the 19th century were the , the Fox, and the Sac. The Fox and Sac held land bounded by the Wisconsin river on the north, the Mississippi river on the west, the Illinois river on the southwest, and the Fox river on the east. They ceded their land to the United States in 1804 but were not required to vacate it until whites came to claim it. The Potawatomi and other tribes held land east of the Fox river and there was a small Potawatomi village somewhere in the town of Burlington in 1830. A treaty made at Chicago in 1833 allowed them to retain possession until 1836. (From 150+ Years book, p. 1.)
