Behind the Scenes at Whitman School House

Discover the story behind one of our community’s treasured landmarks! Join us at Whitman School for a special event celebrating the building’s rich history and preservation efforts by the Historical Society. Learn about the school’s past, and gain rare, behind-the-scenes access to items housed in the “storage shed”— many never previously on display.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply curious about local heritage, this is a unique opportunity to connect with the past and see preservation in action.

All are welcome, though this program is best suited for adult audiences.


     Celebrate America250 with Kiwanis Band Concert

Join us at the historic Echo Park bandstand for a lively performance of patriotic favorites by the Burlington Kiwanis Band. This one-hour program features a compelling portrayal followed by an interactive question-and-answer session, giving attendees the opportunity to delve deeper into the historical context and gain further insight into Martha Washington’s world

One-Room Schoolhouse Experience

Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, Whitman Schoolhouse, 401 Beloit St, Free. Family Event. Registration with the Burlington Library required.

Catch the bus at the Burlington library!   

Join us for story time on the bus as we travel back in time to Burlington’s old school house.

Disembark and enter a different time of pinafores and vests, writing on slates, and playing old-time games with the Burlington Historical Society. Then ride back to the library and pick out a back to school book!


Historic Homes Walking Tour

Saturday, August 15, 2026, 9:00 am, meet at the Burlington Library, FREE

Join us for a guided walking tour through the charming streets of Burlington, where history lives on in the architecture and stories of the community’s earliest homes.

Along the route, you’ll hear fascinating stories about the homes’ original owners, unique architectural details, and how these buildings reflect Burlington’s growth and character over time. From distinctive design features to little-known local history, this tour brings the past to life while celebrating the craftsmanship and heritage that remain part of the community today.

Comfortable walking shoes, a water bottle and curiosity encouraged!
